BRUTALIST WOOD SCULPTURE

This Art Brut sculpture is carved from east coast birch, stands 7 1/2" tall and 3 1/2" wide. Each piece in the sculpture--hand, wrist, and base--is connected by a wooden peg and can be taken apart and put back together. As you can see it has a strong presence and clearly shows the hand of the maker. 

The human hand is considered representative of emotion, power, agility, and the grace or violence of human touch.

Art Brut, french for 'art raw', was a term coined by the artist Jean Debuffet who preferred unfettered art created on the fringes of society because it was "pure and raw...created through its creator's own impulses."
