Art Brut, french for "art raw" and coined by Jean Debuffet who valued art unfettered by cultural and/or social conditioning. To him, art creation on the fringes of society represented "totally pure and raw...created through its creator's own impulses."
In all societies from prehistoric times to present time, in art the hand has expressed emotion, cultural values and beliefs, a source of power, agility, the grace or violence of human touch.
This art brut sculpture, carved from east coast birch, stands 7 1/2" tall and 3 1/2" wide. Each piece in the sculpture is connected by a wooden peg; it has a presence that is at once brutalist and ethereal. You can feel the hand of the artist.
This one is hard to let go.
